pillar practice: no sugary drinks

Updated: Mar 10, 2022

Sugars? Think again.

Think you don't drink sugary drinks? You may want to think again.

Let's see if you have any hidden sugar in your drinks and discuss the top reasons why you should avoid them.

We all know that water is the best for our health, but sometimes we need some variety. With all the drink options available to us, it can get a bit confusing. Because most liquids do not contain protein or fiber, the calories within them are from sugar. If your drink of choice has any calories, they are most likely from sugar. So, this includes most sodas, juices, sports drinks, energy drinks, and some teas and coffees. Also, don't forget your Friday night margarita! Most alcoholic drinks contain as much sugar as soda or more.

What about diet drinks? Most of them have zero calories and no sugar. Are they safe? There are many conflicting studies about the benefits and risks of non-sugar sweeteners. But, there is clear evidence that sugar kills more people every day. Try to use more natural non-sugar sweeteners like monkfruit, stevia, erythritol and xylitol. Again, nothing beats water, but if using diet drinks helps you kick your sugary drink habit, they may be worth it. For more info, see our blog article on low calorie sweeteners.

the top 7 reasons to kick your sugary drink habit:

  1. You're wasting calories. Liquids won't make you full.

  2. You're stressing out your pancreas and liver.

  3. You're increasing your cancer risk.

  4. You're an addict. Sugar can be more addictive than cocaine.

  5. You want to get rid of that gut. Drinking just 1 soda a day can lead to an extra 15 lbs per year.

  6. You don't want diabetes or heart disease.

  7. You want to keep that beautiful smile and posture. We all know that sugary drinks can rot our teeth, but they can weaken our bones as well.

how to start today:

  • Check all your drinks for any hidden sugars or calories.

  • Watch out for honey, agave, and some coffee syrups and creamers-these are sugars as well.

  • Avoid having any sugary drinks in the house.

  • Consider going cold turkey for a few days to ward off cravings.

  • Or, start by switching sugary drinks to diet drinks before making your way to water.

  • Buy a pretty water bottle to motivate you to keep your water by your side all day. Try adding a few pieces of fresh fruit for some variety.

  • Still struggling? Ask a pillarMD physician about trying topiramate off label. It sometimes makes sodas taste bad which might help you stay motivated.

AVOID: all regular sodas, sweet tea, specialty coffees, juices, energy drinks, and sports drinks.

CAUTION: Drinks that use artificial sweeteners, alcoholic drinks. Consider low sugar options, like champagne, rosé, low carb beers, or vodka.

GOOD: water, sparkling water with flavoring but no sweeteners, iced tea without sweetener, coffee without sweetener.
